Watch the video. Try to keep up as you fill in missing words in the movie outline. If you miss some (not a lot - some!), you can ask for them during class discussion of what we viewed. Click the link below to get a copy of the movie guide if you were absent.

 

November 3rd (Thursday)     

Stadium Pictures

This is the first in a series of lessons on the use of image processing software known as NIH Image. This public domain software is an excellent tool that can be applied to discovering many amazing things about the world around us. This first lesson simply introduces you to digital images. It will need to be made up during your advisory period if you were absent!!

Brightness of Stars

Today we will learn how to use the wireless mobile eMacs to collect data in the classroom that can be used in our acience eMac lab. We will also learn about the relationship between the distance and brightness of stars.

The Big Bang

Today's powerpoint lecture is a good introduction to the field of cosmology - the study of our universe. If you were absent, get the notes from a friend, and look at the graphics online at the link below.

The Universe - Magazine Article Summary

Today you will go to the library and research one of the 8 possible topics about the universe using the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature. Use this index to find a magazine article to sit and read and fill out the summary worksheet on. If you were absent, click the links below to open both the topics list and a copy of the summary worksheet. This first lesson simply introduces you to digital images. It will need to be made up during your advisory period if you were absent!!

Big Bang Cosmology Quiz + Hubble's Law: Spreadsheet Lab

Do good on your quiz! The eMac lab activity (after you pass your quiz!) gets you to explore the relationship between distance and speed of distant galaxies - known as Hubble's Law. *Pick up a copy of the lab from me if you were absent and complete the activity during an advisory class. Also be sure to come in during Advisory to make up your quiz if you were absent!

Understanding the Universe

This video explores the vastness of our universe. During the video, you will write 2 questions (with answers!) during each third of the presentation. Six question/answers in all.

Understanding the Universe Discussion

First, we will ask volunteers to share their questions with us to see what we all remember about Monday's video lesson. Then we will continue to explore how scientsist learn about the universe around us using light.

 

November 17th (Thursday)

Measuring the Distance to Nearby Stars Using Parallax -- LAB!

In this lab activity we will explore the relationship between the distance a star is from us and the angle it forms when viewed from opposite sides of Earth's orbit - a relationship referred to as PARALLAX. If you were absent, this lab will need to be made up during an Advisory period. See me for a pass.

 

November 18th (Friday)

Properties of Light/Parallax Quiz + Black Hole Video

Do good on your quiz! The video after the quiz explores the mysteries of one of the most exotic objects in our universe - black holes! *Be sure to come in during Advisory to make up your quiz if you were absent!

Today you will explore how processing digital images can reveal hidden details of the world around us using NIH Image.

 

November 22nd  (Tuesday)

...and other mysteries of the cosmso. Class discussion of Friday's video will lead into a discussion of the exotic objects found in our universe.

NIH Image Lab - Travel USA

Today you will how to use image-processing software to make measurements - after learning how to set scales and use some new tools! If you were absent you need to see me for an Advisory pass to come and make up this lab ASAP.

 

December 9th (Friday)

Moon Rock Analysis

The 6 Apollo missions that landed on our moon brought back many samples of rock for study. Analysis of the mineral content showed significant differences between rocks from lunar maria and lunar highlands. In this activity you will use pie graphs and stacked bar graphs to look closer at these differences. If you were absent see me ASAP for a copy to complete.
