I'm sure you know of the tragic earthquake and tsunami that devasted the lives of countless people late last December in Indonesia and the surrounding region. Here at Chippewa Hills High School we were able to record the event as it happened - the same forces that created the tsunami shook the entire planet. Our IRIS "Seismometer in The Schools" seimometer picked up the waves as they traveled through our area. This is a picture of what was recorded in my classroom.

I will make every attempt to make science relevant to your lives, fun and exciting, and rich with activities that assist you in building your own understanding of the incredible world we live on - and the greater universe around us!

What's New On Earth or in Space?

CHHS Remus THEMIS magnetometer installed October 17th!

Don Dearborn, an engineer from UCLA, arrived this morning to install the equipment that will help scientists solve a mystery of the auroras. CHHS is one of 10 school arounf the nation selected to participate in this mission. Watch for more information in an upcoming issue of the Pioneer!

This image is a sample of the displays generated of the data coming from the magnetometer. The sharp spikes and red bars are where Don moved a shovel near the magnetometer to see what would happen.
